Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get there, and where do I park? Is the building handicapped accessible?
We are located on Main Street in Salem at the corner of Main and Market Streets. There is plenty of off-street parking available. Our building is old, but we have made improvements to our accessibility. Learn how to get inside and where to go, here.
Are my children welcome in worship? What if my baby gets fussy?
Babies and children make a noise that’s joyful to our ears. You have options. Babies can stay with you in worship, or go to our nursery. If you choose to leave the sanctuary with your baby, you are welcome to sit in our parlor just outside the sanctuary door (Market Street side) where you can continue to listen to the service. We have a bulletin/activity sheet for children each week as well as quiet “busy bags” and we invite the children to the front of the sanctuary for a message just for them.
How will I know what’s going on in worship?
Everyone gets a copy of the bulletin, which provides the order of service and words to just about everything. The words to our hymns are easy to find by number in our hymnbook. Bibles are in every pew if you want to read along. There are a few things many of us can recite by heart, but don’t worry if you don’t know the words—the bulletin will point you in the right direction. If you have any questions, just ask someone in the pew with you. We were all new once.
What do I wear?
You can wear whatever you are comfortable in. We have members who wear dresses and coats and ties, and others who attend in shorts, jeans, and T-shirts. All are welcome.
Where should I sit?
You are welcome to sit anywhere in the sanctuary. Nobody will ask you to move, but they may ask you to come again! Our four back pews were built differently and frankly aren’t real comfortable. If someone sits in the back, they’ll think the whole sanctuary is uncomfortable!
Can I take Communion? What if I don’t want to?
Taking Communion is up to you. We believe that the Communion Table is God’s, not ours, and it’s not our job to judge or turn people away. Learn more about Communion.
Is it OK if I just want to come to do service projects?
We would love to have you join us in service! We have lots of opportunities for you to give of your skills, talents, and/or time to help our neighbors in need. It’s also a great way for us to get to know each other.
If I attend worship, do I have to donate?
Donations support the work of the Church, but no one is required to give.
I’ve noticed there are several types of Presbyterian churches. What is distinctive about the PCUSA?
Salem Presbyterian Church is part of the Presbyterian Church, USA. We believe that all people are created by God in God’s image. Therefore, we welcome all persons, as beloved children of God, to participate fully in all aspects of church life.
How do I become a member?
Speak to one of our pastors or our any of our elders (our church officers), and they will be delighted to help you!
